Skate Film 2013

My brothers and I at Double-Headed Monster will be shooting a skate film this Spring and Summer. It will involve the skate culture featured in the Hudson Valley (as north as Kingston to south as Long Island). This isn't just your average skate video but much more with clips from concerts, unconventional techniques, insane cinematography, interviews, etc

Skate Parks & Shops

2nd Nature

2nd Nature is a skatepark/shop in Peekskill, NY. They also have another location in Mamaroneck, NY but that is only a shop with no park. This review will be on the Peekskill location. First lets discuss the store, here are some pics:

The staff had no problem with me lurking around taking photos and video. They also have a needed selection of skate gear, not many skateshops in Westchester/Putnum area.

They even got a chill spot that puts the Zumiez couch to shame. Overall its a cool place with ill gear and chill staff. Skateboarding has been on a rollercoster since a surfer strapped wheels to a board but places like this keeps our community on the rise. CW

Zumiez Grand Opening on Broadway in NYC (feat. The Supra Team)

I started this little re-cap on the train home my notebook. This time we'll be getting off at Yonkers instead of Beacon or Poughkeepsie. By driving down and carpooling we all saved a decent amount of cash. Metro-North tickets are fucking steep and only increasing by the day it seems. Yet I did not want to drive in Manhattan with it's $10 bridge tolls and parking rates to give your Gramps a freaking heart attack. Anyway I threw that in there for the rest of you non-city residents to help with travel costs but back to the topic at hand.
As a kid I never made it to a lot of skate demos or releases so even at 23 these things come to me like a new experience. I can tell you from what I do remember in videos and real life occurrences is the bloodthurst a 12 year old kid has for a free shirt, hat, deck - maybe new ends for your shoelaces, (those pieces of shit!) who knows? They put the criminals in Death Wish to shame! Me and my bros did get our share of loot though and thanked Supra for the gifts.
We got there a little late and the pros seemed to be on the burnt side. Maybe its from traveling from Zumiez to Zumiez everyday followed by an army of Justin Bieber skater counter-parts. Sadly I didn't get in much with the boys but shook hands with Stevie Williams before he signed my poster of him brandishing a textbook switch front noseslide on what looks like Hollywood Boulevard bench. Anyway whenever I go to shit like this with my camera I try to avoid the Mickey-Mouse photos and try to capture the entire atmosphere of the place.

Conclustion: It's expensive but what isn't in Manhattan. But if you're landing back lipslipes and your session gets trashes by a broken bearing and you're in mid-Manhattan....Zonk! It's only a block or two from the Union Sq. Subway Station.

  Poughkeepsie Skate Park (Waryas Park)

The park is located on the boardwalk in Waryas Park on the Hudson. It's opposite of the Poughkeepsie Trian Station on Water St. which is right off the Main Street exit off  Rt. 9. I don't really know how much it is to skate because I always hop the fence (something like $8 a day). The skate park is one of the best in the area but I can't afford to pay a daily fee. Only problem is the park is open in the summer which makes it harder to get in for free.

(Two Quarter Pipes and a Drop-In)

The park never gets too crowed except on some occasions and the locals are aren't Nazi's about new riders. Most attendees are skaters and pedal fiends (BMX) and the occasional eight year-old scooter enthusiast or blader (yeah fruitbooter suck, sorry bitches). The variety of ramps and rails makes the park enjoyable to skate four hours without getting bored.

(Spines and Grind Boxes)

If you'tr lucky you might catch some BEAST tricks from some ill riders.  I'd seen a pedal fiend gap a 360 tailwhip from the high quarter pipe over the drop back into the other quater pipe which is got to be at least 15ft.

(Fun Box, Quarter Pipe and Rails)

The best park in the 845 area code, if you contest send me an email cause I want to know what park stands up to this.

(Quarter Pipe and Drop-In)

In Conclusion:

Pros: -variety of ramps
         -smooth surfaces
         -cool locals
         -kept in good condition
         -cool staff

Cons: -cold and windy as hell during the winter (right off the Hudson)
          -fee for summer days
          - sometimes  a lot BMX riders make it hard to skate
